The YJ was the first of its kind - the Wrangler that replaced the legendary CJ and at the same time set new standards: more robust, more comfortable and ready for any adventure. This example from 1988 is an authentic Laredo in well-maintained original condition - with a fresh technical makeover and an unbroken spirit of adventure.
The Wrangler is powered by a proven 4.2-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with a throaty sound, mechanical reliability and plenty of torque. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the selectable 4×4 all-wheel drive with gear reduction works flawlessly - ready for off-road, snow or beach.
The Laredo trim level is the most luxurious in the model range - if the term luxury can be used at all in a YJ. The interior looks sensationally good, is in very good condition and is designed to be as simple as it is functional.
The service booklet is full to bursting and tells the story of the car right back to when it was bought new. A good 11,000 kilometers ago, the Jeep was fitted with a new, original engine, as the original unit was not resurrected after being out of service from 1999 to 2012. All original documents are still in the vehicle.
The YJ has a parking heater and a set of original wheels with good tires is included with the purchase and can be fitted on request.

Model history
With the introduction of the Jeep Wrangler YJ in 1986 (model year 1987), Jeep opened a new chapter - and at the same time made waves with purists. After more than four decades of CJ tradition came a model that was intended to strike a balance between classic off-roader and everyday leisure vehicle.
The development of the YJ was led by AMC (American Motors Corporation) - even before the takeover by Chrysler in 1987. They tried to modernize the distinctive Jeep face without losing the character - which led to the famous discussion about the rectangular headlights, as this was a clear departure from the round look of the CJ series.
Technically, the YJ was based on the proven CJ-7, but received numerous improvements: an improved frame, wider track, longer leaf springs for better ride comfort and a more robust chassis. Safety standards were raised for the first time - with seat belts fitted as standard, improved steering and a slightly more civilized interior.
Under the hood of the Laredo was usually the legendary 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder (AMC 258), a high-torque long-stroke engine with enormous reliability. In later model years, this was replaced by the 4.0-liter HO, but the 4.2 remained the „real“ Wrangler engine for many. It was combined with a manual 5-speed gearbox (AX-15) or a 3-speed automatic.
The Laredo was the most sophisticated equipment line: with chrome-plated add-on parts, analog round instruments with chrome rings, comfortable sports seats and often with a two-tone paint finish. Despite all this, it remained a genuine Wrangler: with rigid axles, selectable 4WD, a separate ladder frame and fully removable bodywork - soft top, hard top or open, as preferred.
By 1995, over 630,000 YJs had been produced. The Laredo is a rare find today, especially in good original condition. It was the first „civilized“ Wrangler - but with enough raw charm to hold its own off-road.
Today, the YJ is regarded as the binding link between the rugged CJ models and the modern JK/JL series - rustic, robust and with an edgy soul that makes it a true off-road icon.
