Triumph GT6

Description

Are you looking for something special? Not a mainstream classic, but a real insider tip? Then this 1969 Triumph GT6 Mk2 could be just the coupé for you: a racy fastback design, compact dimensions and an inline six-cylinder engine under the hood that sounds the way British sports cars should - distinctive, sonorous and free-revving.

This GT6 is presented in a bright red that emphasizes its lines and perfectly matches its sporty silhouette. The bodywork is solid, the paintwork very attractive and the technology absolutely functional. The GT6 is an honest, well-maintained classic that impresses with its style and character. The engine, transmission and chassis work precisely and reliably. No rattling, no bitching - just start and enjoy.

The 2.0-liter in-line six with around 105 hp provides more propulsion than you might expect. The crisp 4-speed gearbox efficiently transfers the propulsion to the road. And: unlike the Spitfire, a real coupé feeling is guaranteed here - with closed lines, a racing stance and a magnificent engine sound that you will never forget.

A GT6 is rarer than many of its contemporaries, technically more attractive than many an Alfa, and a real „driver's car“. Anyone who loves British roadsters but prefers the fixed roof will find the ideal classic here - compact, elegant, mechanically pure.

Model history

The Triumph GT6 is a British sports car icon with understatement - and with a rare combination of coupé design and in-line six-cylinder technology. The roots of the GT6 go back to the Triumph Spitfire, whose roadster architecture served as the basis for the fixed roof - originally developed as a racing version for Le Mans.

The closed body shape was designed by none other than Giovanni Michelotti, who was also responsible for many other Triumph models as well as vehicles from BMW, Maserati and Ferrari. The fastback rear end with its striking C-pillar gives the GT6 a sporty, aerodynamic appearance that still looks fresh today.

The first series of the GT6 came onto the market in 1966, but was critical in terms of handling - the rear swing axle in particular was no match for the in-line six-cylinder engine. Triumph reacted: from 1968, the GT6 Mk2 (known as the GT6+ in the USA) appeared, with revised rear suspension, a new chassis setup, larger radiator opening and sportier bumpers.

The 2.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, taken from the Triumph Vitesse, produced around 105 hp and made the GT6 one of the fastest small coupés in its class - with a top speed of over 180 km/h and even long-distance capability with an optional overdrive gearbox.

Inside, the GT6 was much sportier than its roadster brothers: wooden instrument panel, real round instruments, bucket seats and sports steering wheel - all geared towards the driver. Nevertheless, the car remained suitable for everyday use - with a trunk, space for two adults and usable ergonomics.

Three series of the GT6 were built up until 1973, with the Mk2 being the most technically advanced. A total of around 41,000 units were produced, making it a comparatively rare classic today - especially in continental Europe.

What makes the GT6 special is the combination of elegant fastback styling, compact dimensions, light weight and a powerful straight-six engine. In a world dominated by British roadsters such as the MGB and Spitfire, the GT6 is for the driver looking for more sound, more power and a roof over their head - without sacrificing style or driving pleasure.

Today, the Triumph GT6 is a coveted classic for individualists, with a solid technical foundation, available spare parts supply and genuine enthusiast potential.
