VW Golf I Convertible

Description

For sale is a rare and characterful VW Golf Cabriolet from 1979, equipped with an original Kamei body kit from the 80s. This early Golf Cabriolet with the serial number 5064 combines classic VW feeling with sporty individuality and clearly stands out from the crowd.

The vehicle is in very good, well-maintained condition, has an unwelded body and has always been treated with care. The body kit, which was fitted in 1985, emphasizes the sporty lines of the convertible and makes the car a real eye-catcher - a piece of contemporary history that authentically reflects the tuning and convertible culture of the late 70s and early 80s. Not least thanks to the chic paint finish in Tahitean Green Pearl.

Technically, the Golf is solid and ready to drive, with typical reliability and lots of driving pleasure. The car also comes with an extremely rare and original „CABRIO“ cover, which was popular at the time, and a tarpaulin for the roof.

An extensive service was carried out in spring 2024. The car was given a new soft top, a carburetor overhaul, new front brakes and a new timing belt including water pump. Since then, the Golf has not covered 200 kilometers, but has been driven regularly with the owner's U-number.

By arrangement, the Golf can be delivered fresh from the MFK and including veteran registration.

This convertible is not only a stylish companion for sunny outings, but also a sought-after collector's item for connoisseurs looking for an exceptional model with scene history. The car offers the perfect blend of classic Volkswagen, convertible driving experience and sporty individuality.

Model history

When Volkswagen presented the Golf in 1974, a revolution began. The Golf was the car that saved VW - the successor to the legendary Beetle and the pioneer of the modern compact class. Chief designer Giorgetto Giugiaro created a masterpiece with the Golf I: clear lines, front-wheel drive, hatchback - everything that later became a matter of course began here.

The Golf 1 was efficient, reliable and affordable - a „car for everyone“. But it soon became clear that it could do more. The Golf GTI arrived in 1976, redefining the image of the sporty compact. Suddenly, everyone wanted a small, fast car that was suitable for everyday use - a concept that would shape generations.

The 1979 Golf was one of the mature vintages of the first series: mature in technology and workmanship, with a proven engine, solid mechanics and the unmistakable sound of the early VW four-cylinder engine.

Tuning conversions from brands such as Kamei, Oettinger and Zender were particularly popular at the time. The Kamei body kit, as seen on this car, was one of the most iconic accessory packages of its time. It gave the Golf a sporty, aggressive look - typical of the late 70s and early 80s, when individualization and motorsport looks were all the rage.

Socially, the Golf stood for a new departure: it was the car of a new generation - pragmatic, free, dynamic. It was not a symbol of luxury, but one of lifestyle. If you drove a Golf, you didn't need a star on the hood - it had style through substance.

Today, the Golf I is a sought-after classic, especially in its original condition or with a contemporary tuning. A car like this - well-maintained, full of character and with an authentic Kamei kit - brings the lifestyle of the 70s back onto the road.
