Model history
The Harley-Davidson Sportster is one of the most enduring and iconic series in motorcycle history. Since its introduction in 1957, it has stood for the epitome of the American middleweight - light, powerful and uncompromisingly direct.
The Sportster series was originally developed to compete against the agile British motorcycles from Triumph and BSA. The recipe: a compact frame, a powerful V2 engine and sportier handling than the large touring Harleys. Over the decades, the Sportster transformed from racer to style icon - and always remained itself.
The Evolution engine, which was introduced in 1986, was a milestone. Robust, reliable and with typical Harley character, it formed the heart of the Sportster family for more than three decades. It was modernized in the XL 1200 NS (Iron 1200), but remained unchanged at its core: 1202 cc displacement, 96 Nm torque and a sound that arouses emotions before you even set off.
The Iron 1200 appeared in 2018 as a throwback to the 70s. Its design was based on the AMF era of the time - with a retro-inspired tank logo, mini Ape handlebars and a matt look. Underneath the nostalgic shell, however, is modern technology: electronically controlled injection, ABS, a robust chassis and contemporary brakes.
In social terms, the Sportster has always stood for independence and individualism.
