Model history
The VW Karmann-Ghia is one of the most successful design projects of its time. When Volkswagen was working on expanding its own model range at the end of the 1940s, the idea of a sportier, more emotional vehicle based on the tried-and-tested Beetle chassis was born. However, the bodywork was to be something special - and VW turned to two important names for this: Carrozzeria Ghia for the design and Karmann in Osnabrück for the production.
The result was a sensation in 1955: an elegant, flowing coupé that was more reminiscent of Italian sports cars than the sober VW line. Designer Luigi Segre created a shape that is still one of the most harmonious silhouettes in automotive history. The recipe for success: sporty looks, reliable VW technology and a price that was significantly lower than that of Italian coupés.
The 1968 model belongs to the mature second series of the Karmann-Ghia. Technically, it was still based on Beetle mechanics, but with numerous improvements: a more powerful engine, revised axles, 12-volt electrics and more modern controls. The body remained largely unchanged - it was simply too beautiful to be given a major overhaul.
Socially, the Karmann-Ghia became a symbol of style consciousness. It was not a sports car in the classic sense, but a car for people who placed elegance above pure performance. Artists, designers, architects and individualists loved it. Even stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bridget Fonda owned one.
In the 1960s and 70s, a tuning scene also developed around the Karmann-Ghia. The air-cooled boxer was easy to optimize - larger carburetors, sharper cams, better exhaust systems, sportier chassis. This type of tuning was considered contemporary, authentic and absolutely in keeping with the character of the car.
Today, the Karmann-Ghia is a coveted classic and the Karmann-Ghia stands for an era in which car shapes were still works of art and driving was a sensual experience. It is a timeless classic, a piece of automotive culture and a symbol of the interplay between Italian design and German engineering.
