Bentley Mark VI

Description

A Bentley Mark VI is not a car that defines itself through volume or effects. It asserts itself through bearing, materiality, and a kind of sovereignty that can only arise from true substance. This right-hand-drive Mark VI from 1948 presents itself in a particularly harmonious two-tone paint finish in the Bentley original colors «Knightsbridge Blue» and Black – classic, elegant, and very distinctive in its appeal.

The interior is kept in gray and harmonizes perfectly with the many wood applications through its restraint. With Bentley, in particular, wood is not decoration but part of the overall impression: surface, feel, and atmosphere are just as important here as technology. And technically, this example is also convincing: the engine has been overhauled and runs excellently, as does the manual transmission. Exactly as you would expect from an older British touring sedan.

The vehicle has undergone extensive restoration, including a large steel sunroof, and is in very good condition. As a small extra, automatic three-point seat belts were installed in the front during the process. The car originally came from Australia (previous owner known and old license plates available), was sold to Germany, and finally ended up freshly painted in Switzerland, where the mechanical restoration began in 2013 and concluded in 2022, after more than 600 hours of professional workshop labor and the overhaul of the six-cylinder engine. Corresponding receipts are available and complete.

This Bentley is a car for people who not only want to own a reliable and timeless luxury classic, but also seek a special driving experience: quiet, refined, mechanically understandable – and free of exaggeration.

Model history

The Bentley Mark VI marked a turning point for Bentley and Rolls-Royce: it is considered the brand's first post-war luxury model and was built from 1946 to 1952. At the same time, it represents the shift from the classic „rolling chassis“ era to more industrialized production: the Mark VI was not only a post-war Bentley but also one of the first Rolls-Royce/Bentley vehicles with a factory-built all-steel body, which was fully completed at the factory.

A central figure in this transition is W. A. Robotham: He recognized early on that the post-war market would demand fewer individual bodies on chassis, and he negotiated with Pressed Steel for a standard body. The steel bodies were supplied by Pressed Steel and painted, assembled, and finished with typical Bentley materials in Crewe.

Stylistically, the Mark VI is closely associated with J. P. Blatchley. Bentley himself names him as the designer of the Standard Steel body and later Design Chief in Crewe. This also explains the special character of the Mark VI: understated elegance rather than opulence, clean lines, careful proportions – luxury expressed through quality rather than show.

Technically, the Mark VI embodies classic Bentley principles in a very robust, long-distance-capable design. Bentley equipped the Mark VI with the 4,257 cc inline-six-cylinder engine (B60), a 4-speed synchromesh gearbox, and traditional Rolls-Royce servo assistance for the drum brakes.

The chassis concept is consistently designed for comfort and stability: an independent front axle with coil springs and wishbones, and at the rear, a rigid axle with leaf springs, plus a sturdy steel frame. Therefore, the Mark VI was not a sports car in the classic sense, but a vehicle that could cover very high cruising speeds of its time in a remarkably quiet, controlled manner – a „Driver's Bentley“ in the best sense.

For today's buyers, the Mark VI is so appealing because it bridges several worlds: the classic pre-war aesthetic, the solid, service-friendly technical understanding of the immediate post-war years, and the beginning of a new manufacturing logic. In good condition – especially after a clean, extensive restoration and with a serviced engine – it's less a showpiece than a cultivated witness to its time: a Bentley that wants to be driven, because that's precisely where its quality becomes most apparent.
