In 1972, Volkswagen AG, in cooperation with the armaments company UNIS, which manufactured automobiles and motorcycles under license from NSU Motorenwerke, founded the company „Tvornica Automobila Sarajevo.“ Various VW models were built here until the war in 1992, and the success story began with the VW Beetle.
According to the VIN, this particular Beetle is one of the first vehicles to leave the factory. The first owner drove it for 20 years and fled to Switzerland with it at the start of the war. The Beetle stayed there for several years until it underwent a complete restoration and was sold to the second owner 12 years ago. This owner mainly used it for extensive trips – accordingly, the car was cherished and well-maintained. The third owner bought the car in 2021 and immediately took it to the workshop for value preservation and guaranteed mobility, where the car was thoroughly checked. The engine was removed and inspected, all seals and hoses were replaced, the ignition and carburetor were overhauled, and much more.
Now it's time for something new, and the very well-maintained, pure white Beetle is looking forward to its fourth owner, who will hopefully need, care for, and cherish it like its predecessors. It is a reliable companion in everyday life and shines, carrying its exciting history, on both leisurely Sunday drives and longer trips.

Model history
The VW Beetle – officially the Volkswagen Type 1 – is one of the few automobiles that became a cultural icon. In its basic form, it was built from 1938 to 2003; a total of 21,529,464 units were produced. This unusually long production run explains why the Beetle is not just a model, but a kind of global memory: generations have driven, repaired, and inherited it – and it remained optically astonishingly consistent throughout.
For the year 1972, the Beetle also broke a historic „sound barrier“: Volkswagen describes that on February 17, 1972, in Wolfsburg, the 15,007,034th Beetle was built, thus surpassing the production record of the Ford Model T – including a corresponding special edition called ’World Champion.’ This makes 1972 a year that is not just „any model year,“ but right in the midst of the golden age of an automotive phenomenon.
Technically, the Beetle was never complicated – but that's precisely where its genius lies. The classic rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout is a hallmark of the model range. The engine is an air-cooled, four-cylinder boxer, whose modular design existed in various displacements for decades – including the 1.3-liter variant. This engine concept was used worldwide in many VW models, most famously in the Beetle.
Late Beetles are very popular today, as the facelift brought many practical improvements. The 1967 modernization of the 1300 included technical advances such as 12-volt electrics, a dual-circuit braking system, and an external fuel filler flap. These are precisely the things that make a classic more enjoyable for everyday use without losing its original character.
In short: The 1972 Beetle is not an „early purist,“ but a mature, refined chapter of an icon – built in a year that is historically significant for the Beetle itself. And that's precisely why it works so well as a classic car today: it carries cult status, but it doesn't drive like a museum piece, but like an honest, likeable classic.
