Ford Model A Hotrod

Description

This 1930 Ford Model A was completely rebuilt in Switzerland in recent years. The cabin was separated from the chassis and stripped down to the sheet metal so that the roof could then be chopped and the paintwork applied all round. The technology was converted to 12 volts and the displays for temperature and battery voltage were replaced. New headlights, an electronic ignition, a new alternator, a new radiator and a revised water pump were also fitted. The wooden floor and door panels were also replaced and the front axle was lowered slightly to give the whole thing a proper stance.

To rein in the 40 hp, the entire brake system was overhauled: The brake drums were turned out, new brake pads and cylinders were fitted and new brake cables were laid. The hotrod was also fitted with new wheels and tires.

After several hundred hours of work and less than 5,000 kilometers driven, the car is now finished and freshly tested as a veteran. Get in, drive off, enjoy and look infinitely cool.

You can find a video about the hotrod at the bottom of this page.

Model history

The Ford Model A was built between 1928 and 1931. This model replaced the legendary Model „T“, known as the Tin Lizzy. The first Model A was introduced on October 27, 1927 and rolled off the assembly line on December 2, 1927. It was also produced in Europe, South America and under license in the Soviet Union.

The Model A was delivered in four standard colors - but not in black. For production reasons, however, the mudguards were always painted black.

There was a whole range of different body styles and the chassis was built in such a way that all the body styles on offer could be fitted to it. The Model A was available as a Coupé (standard and deluxe), Business Coupé, Sports Coupé, Roadster (standard and deluxe), two and four-seater Cabriolet, Convertible Sedan, Phaeton (standard and deluxe), Tudor (two-door, standard and deluxe), Fordor (four-door, two or three windows, standard and deluxe), Town Sedan, Victoria, Station Truck, Taxi, Truck and Commercial.

The engine was a four-cylinder in-line engine with vertical valves, a displacement of 3236 cc, a single Zenith rising-flow carburetor and around 30 kW, i.e. 40 hp.

These little horses pushed the simple vehicle towards 100 km/h. The fuel consumption was between 8 and 9 liters per 100 kilometers.

The transmission was a non-synchronized 3-speed sliding gear transmission with reverse gear. The Model A had mechanically actuated drum brakes with deflection shafts and brake rods. Like the T, the A had rigid drawbar axles (pushed at the front) on transverse leaf springs.

The 1928/1929 and 1930/1931 model years look slightly different, but are technically largely identical. One of the modifications from 1930 onwards is the wheels. The 1928/29 model years are equipped with 21-inch rims, the 1930/31 model years with 19-inch rims.

For a Roadster you had to fork out 385 dollars and for the luxurious, four-door «Town Sedan» you had to pay up to 570 dollars.

Production ended on August 31, 1931 after 4,320,446 vehicles had been built. The Model A was replaced by an updated model, which Ford called the ’Model B’.

Good to know:

- Henry Ford had specified a certain size for the transport crates to his suppliers for the drive engines so that he could manufacture the floorboards for the vehicles from them.

- The Ford Model A was the first Ford vehicle to be equipped with a brake, clutch and accelerator pedal as well as a gearshift according to today's standards.
