Ford Thunderbird
Description
Classic lines, lavish chrome accents and the sonorous roar of a V8 - this 1955 Ford Thunderbird embodies everything that makes up the American dream on wheels. As the first model year of the „T-Bird“, it is not only a design milestone, but also a genuine collector's item with cult status.
The car impresses with its elegant two-door line, with the typical removable hardtop, the wheel arch covers and the characteristic wings at the rear. The classic white paintwork harmonizes perfectly with the chrome-trimmed interior, which has been stylishly restored. Every lever and every detail breathes the spirit of the Fifties.
Under the long hood is a powerful 292 cui V8 Y-block, coupled to a smooth-shifting automatic transmission called Ford-O-Matic. The engine runs silky smooth, offers more than enough torque and, combined with the incomparable V8 sound, provides a real cruising feeling. This T-Bird is not a showpiece, but is ready to drive and well maintained - ready for weekend trips, events or stylish strolls along the lakeside promenade.
In 1985 and 1986, this Thunderbird was dismantled and completely restored in Switzerland. It was an extremely complex restoration that has kept the car in excellent condition to this day. Not least thanks to a 20-year break, which the car spent properly mothballed in a large collection.
Anyone who drives a 1955 Thunderbird is not just driving a car - they are driving an icon. A rarity on European roads. A timeless statement on four wheels.

Model history
When Ford presented the first Thunderbird in 1955, the reaction was overwhelming. The Thunderbird was not a direct response to the Corvette - as is often claimed - but a vision of its own: a luxurious, sporty two-seater that focused more on comfort and style than pure sportiness. The concept worked - with over 16,000 units sold in the first year, the „T-Bird“ was a complete success and helped Ford to modernize its brand image.
The Thunderbird was created under the direction of George Walker and Louis D. Crusoe. Their vision: a compact, stylish two-seater with luxurious features - in other words, a „personal luxury car“ long before this category officially existed. In contrast to the purist Corvette, the Thunderbird offered electric windows, radio, whitewall tires, removable hardtop and even an optional electric seating system as standard.
The engine consisted of the 292 cubic inch Y-block V8 with around 193 hp - powerful enough to accelerate the Thunderbird to around 180 km/h. The cultivated, silky-smooth running characteristics of the V8, which ideally matched the elegant cruiser character, were particularly appreciated. The car was optionally available with a 3-speed manual gearbox (with or without overdrive) or a Ford O-Matic automatic transmission.
In terms of chassis technology, the Thunderbird was based on a shortened Ford full-size chassis, with independent front suspension and rigid rear axle - typical for the time, but tuned for superior gliding. However, the drum brakes all round demanded anticipatory driving.
The first Thunderbirds, known as „Baby Birds“, are considered the most desirable today. Their design mix of jet-age influences, European elegance and American opulence makes them timeless works of art on wheels. Especially early models with matching numbers, original V8s and in unmodified condition are extremely sought-after today - in the USA as well as in Europe.
The Thunderbird was not just a car, but a cultural symbol: It appeared in Elvis songs, was driven by Marilyn Monroe and was present in dozens of films of the 50s and 60s. A real statement of individuality and class.
Today, a faithful 1955 Thunderbird is a ticket to the world of classic US automotive art - elegant, reliable, iconic.
