Model history
The Chevrolet Corvette C2 was introduced in the summer of 1962 as the Sting Ray (spelled with a space, unlike the C3). For the first time, the Corvette was also available as a coupé, which doubled sales as the car now also found advocates in the north. The 327cc V8 engine was initially taken from the C1. The small block produced between 250 and 375 hp in the C2. In mid-1965, the 396 big block with a whopping 425 hp was introduced. From 1966, the big block was bored out to 7.0 liters and thus delivered a decent 450 hp.
One of the innovations were the rotating headlights, which were to return regularly as folding headlights until the C5. The split rear window of the 1963 coupé gave this C2, which was limited to the year 63, the well-known name „Split Window“. While the rear end was partially carried over from the last Corvette C1, the rest of the body was completely redesigned. The pronounced wedge shape of the front and rear sections is characteristic of the so-called midyear models. The folding headlights and the striking bend in the side of the body at wheel arch level emphasize the beautiful contours of the car.
Independent suspension was used on the rear axle for the first time and from 1965 the Corvette was even equipped with disc brakes with 4-piston callipers on the front and rear axles. The dual-circuit braking system made its debut in 1967 and air conditioning and leather seats were now also available for an extra charge.
The Corvette C2 Sting Ray was only built from September 1962 to July 1967 and a total of 117,964 units were produced, including 45,546 coupés. Its successor, the C3, appeared in the fall of 1967.
