Chevrolet El Camino Custom

Description

The vehicle for sale here is a 66 model year with the Custom (Malibu) trim level. This can be checked by the model style number on the cowl tag (13680). The number 6 indicates that it is a model equipped with a V8. The Chevy saw the light of day at the Fremont production plant in California (BF04239) in the 2nd week of February 1966 (02C). The new car buyer at the time opted for an El Camino in blue (730) and equipped the pickup with air conditioning.

The El Camino came to Switzerland around 2015 and was imported from a private owner. The new owner was not able to master the project car and so it was technically refurbished by California Cars in Aarburg and passed the Swiss MFK - registered as a delivery van, of course.

The El Camino is in very good technical condition. It has a 327 cui V8 (5.4l), which originally produced 210 hp. With performance optimization in the form of an Edelbrock intake manifold, carburetor, headers and a 2-pipe exhaust system, you can expect around 230-240 hp. Cooling is provided by a new Champion aluminum radiator and a separate automatic oil cooler. A TH350 automatic gearbox with 3 gears takes care of the transmission. Completely new brakes, disc brakes on the front axle, ensure decent braking performance in 1966.

The flatbed is hidden under a custom-made tarpaulin and has been lined with Raptor bedliner for optimum use and protection. A major service was recently carried out and the carburetor, ignition and valve clearance were readjusted. New bushings throughout the chassis and a front and rear sway bar with a larger cross-section than original ensure driving pleasure and decent cornering.

The entire interior and paintwork were refurbished before the car was imported to Switzerland. The paintwork is decent but American. Inside, a modern hi-fi system with amplifier and 4 speakers provides entertainment in addition to the audible V8 roar. The new Grant steering wheel also gives the truck a sporty look from the inside.

All in all, this delivery van is a reliable classic car with a high utility value that is suitable for everyday use (tested).

Model history

The Chevrolet El Camino saw the light of day in the 1959 model year. It was the answer to the Ford Ranchero, which had been introduced two years earlier and was - like the El Camino - a small pick-up on a passenger car platform. General Motors had simply and successfully copied this concept and, like its rival, gave the small commercial car a Spanish name - El Camino means the road. The '59 model was based on the Bel-Air/Impala platform and also adopted its exterior design. From the front to just before the B-pillar, the El Camino resembled the full-size Chevys, after which a curved rear window was mounted on a thin and sloping B-pillar, which ended in a large loading area. These full-size pickups were produced in the years 59 and 60.

After a few years of non-production, the second generation was launched in 1964, but this time as a mid-size pickup based on the Chevrolet Chevelle. Like the first generation, the 64 model adopted the design of the base model. More precisely, the 2-door station wagon, which ends after the B-pillar and continues in the form of a flatbed. And so the El Camino comes in two trim levels, Regular and Custom. The El Caminos with the Custom trim level had the trim of the Chevelle Malibu and the choice of numerous options.

New exterior styling gave the 1966 Chevelle and El Camino a new look, with all sheet metal below the beltline redesigned, except for the tailgate. For the first time on an El Camino model, the name was on the sheet metal, specifically on an emblem in the center of the new grille. Inside, headrests were a new option and three-point seat belts could also be ordered in this model year. For performance-oriented customers, the 396-ci Turbo-Jet V8 with 325 and 360 hp versions was now on the order lists.
