Model history
The Ford Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most iconic vehicles in American automotive history – and the 1967 model year plays a special role. It marks the first major evolution of the original Mustang concept and clearly shows how the vehicle oriented itself towards true performance.
When the Mustang was introduced in 1964 under the leadership of Lee Iacocca, the goal was clear: a sporty-looking yet affordable vehicle for a broad spectrum of buyers. The so-called „Pony Car“ was born – a vehicle class that combined compact dimensions with long hoods, short rear ends, and an emotional appeal.
With the 1967 facelift, the Mustang became noticeably more mature. The body grew in length and width, but most importantly, it gained more presence. The grille became larger, the lines sharper, and the overall appearance more aggressive. Responsible for this evolution was the Ford design team, led by Eugene Bordinat, which was specifically working towards more space for more powerful engines and a sportier look.
This particular step was crucial, as 1967 was one of the first years the Mustang could accommodate truly big engines. The introduction of big-block V8 units clearly showed that Ford no longer saw the Mustang as just a stylish leisure vehicle, but as a serious performance car. This brought it closer to the classic muscle car world.
Technically, the Mustang remained comparably simple in construction—and that is precisely part of its appeal to this day. A conventional design with a unibody chassis, independent front suspension, and a robust rear axle provided a solid foundation that could be excellently modified. This simple, accessible technology quickly made the Mustang one of the most popular vehicles for tuning and motorsports.
And that is precisely why it remains relevant to this day. Hardly any other classic car is modified, improved, or personalized as often as the Mustang. Everything is possible, from a restored original to a uncompromising restomod – and it is socially accepted. The Mustang is not a car that necessarily needs to be preserved. It is a platform that is allowed to evolve.
Current variants, like the convertible, also show a special side of the Mustang: the connection between performance and freedom. Driving with the top down was never just a comfort feature here, but part of the idea. Speed, sound, and wind belonged together from the very beginning.
Today, the 1967 Mustang is one of the most sought-after variants of the early model series. It combines the original lightness of the first model with the significantly more confident appearance of later years. At the same time, it offers the technical basis for integrating modern components – exactly as has been done with this vehicle.
