We like all kinds of vehicles, but the sheer presence of an American full-size coupe from the late 60s is unlike anything else. The size, the aggressive look, the engines, the sound - simply sensational. The big cruisers are comfortable to boot and the power of the reliable big-block V8 engines effortlessly compensates for the weight of the sheet metal giants.

However, precise handling is sought in vain here, as the driving experience is rather cumbersome and comfortable, typical of the full-size cars of this era. The chassis effortlessly copes with bumps and potholes, enabling smooth travel even on longer road trips.

Model history

The Plymouth Sport Fury is an iconic model from the Plymouth Division of Chrysler Corporation that was produced in several generations from 1959 to 1978. This series reflects the evolution of the American automobile market and the changes in design, technology and consumer preferences over two decades.

The Plymouth Fury was first introduced in 1956 and was originally a top-of-the-range model in the Plymouth line. The Sport Fury was introduced as a separate model variant in 1959 to cater to the growing market for sporty, high-performance cars. The first generation Sport Fury was offered as a hardtop and convertible and was characterized by distinctive rear fins, large chrome bumpers and a sporty interior. It had V8 engines that offered solid performance and featured eye-catching styling that was typical of the late 1950s.

In 1962, the Sport Fury was transferred to the „full-size“ category. The design became more modern and streamlined, with the tail fins disappearing and the overall lines becoming smoother and more aerodynamic. This generation also offered powerful V8 engines, including the 426 Max Wedge, which became known for its quarter-mile performance. The interior became more luxurious to emphasize the car's sporty character.

The Sport Fury was redesigned again in 1965. The design followed the trend at the time towards larger, wider cars with more striking lines and a more aggressive appearance. The third generation was particularly successful and cemented the Sport Fury's reputation as a sporty and elegant alternative to other full-size models. Powerful engines such as the 383 and 440 were also introduced during this period, giving the Sport Fury impressive performance.

1969 marked the beginning of the fourth generation of the Sport Fury, which was produced until 1973. This generation was characterized by a robust, muscular design with wide body shapes and an aggressive front end. The engine range continued to include powerful V8 units, and the Sport Fury was offered as both a sporty hardtop and an elegant convertible. This generation was also very popular in the muscle car era and helped to reinforce Plymouth's reputation as a manufacturer of high performance vehicles.

The fifth generation, introduced in 1974, was the final iteration of the Sport Fury. These models were larger and heavier than their predecessors, reflecting the trend towards larger, more comfortable cars that prevailed in the mid-1970s. Despite the oil crisis and the increasing importance of fuel efficiency, the Sport Fury retained its reputation as a powerful vehicle, even though engine power was curtailed due to stricter emissions regulations. The design of this generation was less aggressive and more focused on comfort and luxury.

In 1978, production of the Sport Fury was discontinued as the market continued to move towards more compact, fuel-efficient vehicles. The energy crisis of the 1970s and increasing competition from imported vehicles had a significant impact on the American automotive industry, and many large, powerful models were discontinued.

Today, the Plymouth Sport Fury is prized by car enthusiasts and collectors. The different generations of the model reflect the trends and technological advances of the respective decades. The models from the 1960s are particularly sought-after due to their classic muscle car aesthetics and powerful engines.
