Fiat 130 Coupé

Description

The Fiat 130 Coupé is a wild ride on the Italian razor's edge of automotive history. Despite its angular design, it was not the car of a tough gangster, but rather that of a charming Italian who loves to travel in style. It was not without reason that Bud Spencer took on a Lamborghini Espada in the 1973 film. In fact, the 130 was more interested in the BMW 3.0 CSi, which was also priced in the same range.

The 165 hp of the V6 engine is not exactly breathtaking, but you soon realize that it's not about speed, but about the driving experience. Sometimes it's just much nicer to drive slower - especially when you're accompanied by admiring glances. The sound of the exhaust goes very well with the sporty Pininfarina design.

The automatic gearshift could be described as „relaxed“, because when changing gear it feels as if the car is briefly thinking about whether it really wants to change gear or would rather have another espresso. The handling is just as typical of the era - more comfortable than dynamic, and all in a very pleasant way.

The workmanship and materials of the interior, from fine leather and high-quality fabric to wood applications and instruments in crosshair design, convey the feeling of being in an Italian design studio on four wheels. On top of this, the machine is extremely rare: only 4493 were built by Pininfarina between 1971 and 1976, and this example bears the number 798.

The condition is very nice and this chic coupé has been well maintained. The soft leather seats are intact and the interior is generally very well maintained. Over CHF 18,000 was invested in the car in 2023 and 2024. In addition to the usual service and sheet metal work, various parts such as timing belt, tension pulley, water pump, thermostat, complete exhaust, starter, tires, complete brakes including brake lines, etc. were replaced. The car was also completely cavity-sealed. A few tiny rust bubbles have remained on the outer skin as the car has not been repainted. These are not a problem, but should be observed.

Interesting fact: there is a lever on the right under the steering wheel that opens the passenger door. Thanks to this, the casual Italian didn't have to bend laboriously to the right to open the door for the lady.

Model history

The Fiat 130 Coupé, introduced in 1971, was an elegant and ambitious project by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat. The model belonged to the upper middle class and was positioned as a luxurious counterpart to the more practical Fiat 124 series. The coupé was not only a technical but also a stylistic masterpiece of its time and helped Fiat to achieve a more upmarket brand perception.

The design of the Fiat 130 Coupé comes from Pininfarina and the designers responsible were Paolo Martin and Leonardo Fioravanti. For the Fiat 130 Coupé, they were inspired by the clean lines and powerful appearance of Italian Gran Turismo models, but combined a contemporary interpretation of luxury and sportiness.

Fiat developed a completely new platform for the Fiat 130 Coupé, the first model in the 130 series. This not only enabled a comfortable driving style, but also offered an exceptionally generous interior. The body was a self-supporting steel construction that guaranteed both stability and an attractive appearance. Inside, the Fiat 130 Coupé was equipped with fine materials, including leather, wood and carpets, which underlined the vehicle's upmarket aspirations.

The Fiat 130 Coupé was powered by a 3.2-liter V6 engine with an output of 165 hp. This engine enabled the Coupé to reach a top speed of around 190 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 10 seconds. The engine was coupled to a 3-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual gearbox, with the automatic version being preferred, especially on the domestic Italian market. The vehicle had independent front and rear suspension.

Production of the Fiat 130 Coupé ran from 1971 to 1976, with a total of around 4,493 vehicles of the model being produced. This small number made the model a rare classic that is highly valued today by collectors and lovers of Italian cars. Despite its elegant appearance and solid engineering, however, the Fiat 130 Coupé was never able to establish itself on a large scale, not least due to competition from more powerful and popular models such as the Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce and the BMW 3.0 CSi.

Production of the Fiat 130 Coupé ended in 1976 when Fiat revised the model in favor of the Fiat 131.
