Mercedes-Benz 280 SE
Description
This 280 SE is one of the first vehicles in the W116 model series introduced in 1972, making it one of the very first S-Class examples. The car was completely restored by Mercedes Munich a few years ago and after being imported to Switzerland, the engine was overhauled by Brogli in Windisch. The restoration cost a whopping 68,000 euros and the engine overhaul cost 15,000 CHF. The previous owner more than loved this car and looked after it very well even after the restoration.
As the car has only been driven a good 5,000 kilometers since the restoration, it is now to be passed on to a new owner. The condition is excellent and rust, dents or scratches are nowhere to be found. Everything works as it should and the car glides along the roads just as luxuriously today as it did 50 years ago.

Model history
The W116, as offered here, is the first of its kind. The W116 was the very first S-Class and marked the beginning of Mercedes' successful luxury saloon in 1972.
The W116 was significantly more modern than its predecessor, both inside and out, despite the outdated chrome. The W 116 replaced the W108/109 series and was presented at the IAA with the 280 S, 280 SE and 350 SE models. The 280 models used the M 110 straight-six engine with two overhead camshafts and the 350 SE was powered by the V8 called M 116. Six months after the market launch, the 450 SE followed with the 4.5-liter V8, called M 117.
The 116 series was the first production vehicle to feature double wishbone front suspension with zero steering roll radius and brake pitch support, which significantly improved the driving characteristics.
Of course, the S-Class also scored points in terms of safety: the fuel tank was no longer located in the rear, but was installed above the rear axle to protect it from collision, while the heavily padded dashboard, deformable or recessed switches and levers as well as a four-spoke safety steering wheel with impact absorber provided adequate impact protection in the interior. In addition, the entire safety passenger cell, including the doors, was reinforced all round.
Another special feature of the W116 are the wind deflector profiles on the A-pillars, which served as water gutters in the rain and kept the side windows clean even in unfavorable weather conditions.
