Chevrolet Suburban

Description

Anyone who says that big classics have to be impractical has not yet seen this 1979 Chevrolet Suburban. In fresh yellow, with a completely revised interior, new electrics and a smooth-running V8, this 9-seater presents itself as a rolling contemporary witness - with the reliability of a clockwork combined with a truck.

Under the hood is a sturdy Chevy small-block, which moves forward with its typical US car sound and plenty of torque. The engine runs smoothly, the automatic transmission shifts cleanly and the brakes, steering and electrics work flawlessly. The Holley carburetor, in conjunction with headers and a Gibson exhaust system with side tailpipes, provides the right power and sound. Power steering, trailer coupling and a roof rack round off the package.

This Suburban is ready for big tasks and despite its mass, the car is surprisingly pleasant to drive - whether in the city, in the country or on the highway. When it's time to go off-road, the fat new Baja tires on the new powder-coated rims provide the necessary traction.

Inside, the Suburban has been lovingly refreshed - everything is color-coordinated and very comfortable. The entire wiring harness has been replaced and a new retro radio with Bluetooth and DAB has been added. The 3 rows of seats offer space for two families and, with more than enough legroom, a trunk that puts smaller apartments in the shade.

Invoices for these and many other parts are available and there are also lots of spare parts.

Whether as a show vehicle, family cruiser, road trip buddy or cool promo platform: this yellow monster classic not only brings color into play, but also plenty of style, utility and soul.

Model history

With its start of production in 1933, the Chevrolet Suburban is the longest-serving, continuously produced vehicle model in automotive history - even before the Corvette or the Ford F-Series. The name „Suburban“ was initially used by General Motors for various brands (GMC, Holden, Chevrolet), but established itself as a synonym for large, robust family and commercial vehicles from the GM Group from the 1960s at the latest.

The 7th generation (1973-1991), to which the 1979 Suburban offered here belongs, was a milestone: it was the first Suburban with an optional four-sided door configuration, better noise insulation, improved aerodynamics and a larger interior. Based on the „Rounded-Line“ pickup platform, the Suburban offered genuine SUV comfort with truck robustness for the first time - way ahead of its time.

In most cases, the Suburban was powered by V8 engines - from the solid 5.7-liter small block to the high-torque 454 cui big block. Straight sixes were also available, but the majority opted for the velvety V8 sound. Depending on the version, the power output ranged from around 160 to over 240 hp. The drive was usually combined with Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic gearboxes, which were considered virtually indestructible.

Inside, the Suburban was a real space miracle: up to 9 seats were possible - thanks to three rows of seats, a full-length front bench and optional rear entry. Ideal for large families, emergency vehicles or road trip legends. The vehicles were often used by authorities, fire departments, police, school transporters or film crews.

The 1979 Suburban no longer had much in common with the original „Carryall“ concept: utility, comfort and style were combined here. Air conditioning, electric windows, tinted windows, sound systems - everything was available. Today, the 70s models are popular classics thanks to their clean lines, square front and robust construction. In addition, the spare parts situation is excellent thanks to the variety of GM parts and the aftermarket range.

A 1979 Suburban in good condition, like this example, has become a rarity - especially with well-maintained technology and a new interior. The combination of an authentic exterior, a fresh cabin and functioning spaciousness is a unique selling point today.

Whether as a lifestyle classic, movie prop or retro touring vehicle - this Suburban has all the qualities that make up the American automobile myth. And something else: it's big enough to share with friends.
