Model history
The history of Opel begins in 1862, when Adam Opel founded a sewing machine factory in Rüsselsheim. In 1899, Opel presented its first car and quickly developed into one of the largest car manufacturers in Germany. In the 1970s, Opel was particularly active in the mid-range segment and wanted to challenge the automotive competition with new models.
The Opel Ascona B, introduced in 1975, was the second generation of the Ascona and built on the success of its predecessor. This series combined modern design with technical reliability and was available as both a sedan and a station wagon. The Ascona B was known for its spacious interior and solid build quality. Over the years, the model underwent numerous facelifts and technical updates to keep pace with rapidly changing market needs.
The Opel Ascona B 2000 SR, which came onto the market in 1979, was a sporty version of the popular model. Equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produced around 100 hp, the Ascona B 2000 SR offered an appealing driving experience for both families and sporty drivers. Its performance and precise handling made it a favorite among drivers who valued dynamics.
The design of the Ascona B was characterized by clear lines and a sporty silhouette. The striking radiator grille and wide fenders gave the vehicle a robust yet elegant look. The interior offered sufficient space for up to five people and the comfortable seats ensured a pleasant driving experience, even on longer journeys. The vehicle was also equipped with modern amenities, which made it attractive to buyers.
The popularity of the Ascona B in the 1980s led to the model taking part in various competitions, particularly in rallying. Its successes on the racetrack helped to further strengthen the Opel brand's sporty image. The Ascona B was thus perceived not only as an everyday vehicle, but also as a serious sports car.
At a time when the automotive industry was developing rapidly, Opel remained innovative and adapted to the new requirements. The Ascona B was not only a symbol of the automotive freedom of the 70s and 80s, but also an example of Opel's ability to build high-quality, high-performance vehicles.
Despite the success of the Ascona B, the automotive industry began to change. The introduction of compact cars and increasing competition led to a decline in demand for mid-size cars. Production of the Ascona was discontinued in the early 1990s, but the model left a lasting impression.
Today, the Opel Ascona B 2000 SR has a loyal fan base. Classic car enthusiasts and collectors appreciate the vehicle for its unique design and sporty performance. The memories of the time when the Ascona B was on the road live on in the hearts of many drivers.
The story of Opel and the Ascona B 2000 SR is therefore a story of innovation, passion and everlasting driving pleasure. It shows how a car can go beyond its technical performance to become part of people's culture and lifestyle.
