BMW 528i E28

Description

Sovereignty on four wheels: The 1982 BMW 528i exemplifies the golden age of Bavarian engineering. This vehicle is not just a well-kept classic car - it is an invitation to travel in style, where understatement and performance go hand in hand.

Under the hood is the legendary M30B28 in-line six-cylinder engine, whose 184 hp in combination with the solidly tuned automatic transmission ensures smooth power delivery. The sound? Rich, cultivated and typically BMW. The body in classic Polaris metallic is in good condition, as is the well-kept interior with its blue fabric seats. The advanced on-board electronics for the 80s - including on-board computer - are fully functional.

Technically, the vehicle has been continuously maintained and the BMW drives tightly, directly and surprisingly dynamically - a real driver's car that can be driven effortlessly in everyday life, but also shines on winding country roads.

Anyone looking for an honest, mechanically authentic 5 Series with character will find it here. It's not a filler, it's not rusty, it's not a tinkered with project - it's an original classic with history and potential.

Model history

The BMW 528i of the E28 series, produced from 1981, was part of a pioneering generation of 5 Series models that took technology, design and driving experience to a new level. As the successor to the E12, the E28 combined classic BMW virtues with innovative elements that still characterize the brand image today.

Developed under the direction of Claus Luthe (design) and Wolfgang Reitzle (chassis development), the E28 was an evolution with clear advances: it was the first 5 Series with optional ABS, electronic on-board computer, digital fuel consumption displays and optional catalytic converters - highly modern at the time. The angular but elegant design - with the typical BMW kidney grille and discreet shark nose - is considered iconic today.

The 528i was the top-of-the-range six-cylinder model (below the M5) and was equipped with the robust and powerful M30 engine. This in-line six-cylinder had already proven itself in the E12 and the larger E23 (7-series) and was characterized by smooth running, reliability and sufficient torque.

With 184 hp at 5,800 rpm and a torque of 240 Nm, the 528i had a superior engine. The driving performance was impressive: 0 to 100 km/h in around 8.4 seconds, top speed over 215 km/h. These figures made the car a sporty glider - suitable for long distances, but always ready for dynamic driving.

The chassis of the E28, with MacPherson struts at the front and an elaborately guided semi-trailing rear axle, provided the famous BMW handling: slightly oversteering, precise, driver-oriented. The power steering was direct, but not nervous - a real advantage over many of today's vehicles.

Inside, the 528i impressed with a driver-centered cockpit, high-quality materials and excellent workmanship. The seats offered both comfort and lateral support, and there was enough space even for tall people. Extras such as seat heating, sunroof, air conditioning or cruise control were available on request - many vehicles were equipped to a correspondingly high standard.

A total of over 722,000 E28s were built, of which around 90,000 were 528i models. Despite these figures, well-maintained originals are rare today, as many vehicles have been used up or converted over the years. The E28 was also the platform for the very first BMW M5, which further emphasizes its importance within BMW history.

Today, the E28 is considered a classic of BMW's „Golden Era“ - analog, honest, mechanical - with a clear design language that appeals to fans and collectors alike. The 528i is one of the most sought-after versions: powerful, comfortable and yet subtle - a real wolf in a pinstripe suit.
