Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Description
He's angular, loud, and full of character: the 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – a true child of the 80s, built for the highway and made for drivers with gasoline in their blood. The third-generation F-body with its distinctive appearance, deep V8 sound, and dramatic hood with air intakes is everything – except inconspicuous.
Under the hood, a 5.0-liter TPI V8 works, producing around 215 horsepower in this version. The combination of electronic fuel injection and a 4-speed automatic transmission ensures a surprisingly powerful acceleration, while the chassis – with stabilizer bars, gas-pressure shock absorbers, and front disc brakes – provides stability and the characteristic US car ride comfort.
This example presents itself in classic red and gray, with silver emblems and the original T-roof – a real eye-catcher, especially with the roof panels removed. The interior impresses with fabric sports seats and classic 80s flair.
Technically, the car is in excellent condition – including its veteran status. The interior is very well-preserved, and the paintwork is also in very good condition despite minor signs of wear. The plastic spoiler shows an age-appropriate patina, as is commonly found.
Collectors, US car fans, or anyone else who enjoys authentic 80s muscle car atmosphere will get their money's worth here.

Model history
The 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am marked the pinnacle of the third Firebird generation (1982–1992), a decade that represented a new direction for American sports coupes. While earlier muscle cars relied on raw power, the 3rd Gen Firebird combined aerodynamic lines, new fuel injection technologies, and a fresh design with classic American charm.
In response to the oil crises of the '70s and new emissions laws, the Firebird entered the '80s with a more modern approach: a lighter body, improved efficiency, but without losing its muscle car heritage. The Trans Am version was the sportiest and most aggressive model in the Firebird lineup – featuring its own body kit, spoilers, air intakes, and special paint schemes.
1989 was a special year: It was the last production year before the comprehensive overhaul for the 1991 model year – and at the same time the year in which the Trans Am shone with technical highlights. In addition to the well-known 5.0-liter TPI V8, a limited turbo edition with a 3.8-liter V6 and 250 hp was also available – based on the Grand National drive.
The standard TPI V8 was based on GM's famous Small-Block engine. With Tuned Port Injection (TPI), an electronically controlled fuel injection system, throttle response was significantly improved. Combined with a TH700-R4 automatic transmission or an optional 5-speed manual transmission, the Trans Am could be driven comfortably or sportingly.
Visually, the Firebird remained true to itself: sharp lines, pop-up headlights, T-roof, or aero flaps at the rear – the Trans Am was more airplane than car. Inside, it impressed with a cockpit-like dashboard, digital displays (depending on equipment), and deep seats with side support. Options like air conditioning, cruise control, a sound system, or electric windows rounded off the package.
The Trans Am became particularly popular due to its television debut as the basis for „KITT“ in Knight Rider (although a 1982 model was used there). This image – high-tech, a life of its own, invincibility – rubbed off on the entire Firebird.
To this day, the 1989 Trans Am is a cult object. The combination of V8 power, 80s design, and a cinematic presence makes it one of the most iconic American cars of its era. Enthusiasts value it for its simplicity, its DIY-friendly construction, and its unmistakable look.
With increasing demand and limited availability, the Trans Am is now considered a classic American youngtimer with genuine collector potential – and a symbol of the last era of „real“ Pontiac power.
